Chapter 19

Ivy

Vivian had just admitted to being a witch, and I was still trying to process that fact, along with all the other things that had occurred this morning in the shop—when Zappy ran into the office. He informed us that the prisoner—his word, not mine—was awake and would likely be trying to escape soon. Vivian got up from her desk and went to check on Julian while I stayed behind.

Zappy ran up my arm and sat in my outstretched hands.

How did Julian seem? Was he hurt?

Zappy shook his head. Not really. A little banged up, but he’s going to survive. How are you doing?

A little banged up, but I’m going to survive. I laughed softly, but Zappy stared up at me with worried eyes. Really, I’m okay. I added. I feel a lot safer now that I know how powerful Vivian is and the fact that she’s here to protect me in case Julian really did escape. So that’s good.

Aside from your physical safety, though… How are you feeling? I can’t even imagine how scary it must’ve been to be attacked by the same guy you were falling for.

I sighed and sat back in the chair. The tea Vivian made me would get cold soon, but I didn’t have the stomach to finish it.

Can we maybe just put that conversation on hold for now? I feel like I’m still coming down from the shock of it all, and I just need some time to process and regulate before I talk about everything. I don’t want to think about it and end up in fight-or-flight mode again.

I understand. Zappy curled up into a little cinnamon roll in my lap, and I scratched between his tiny ears. We don’t have to talk about anything. I’m just happy you’re safe.

We sat in a comfortable silence for a while, and I started to feel a little better with each passing minute. I even reached for my tea and inhaled the herbal vapors, and then the door to the office opened, and Vivian returned. She looked a little frazzled as she came to sit across from me.

“He’s fine,” she said. “Still tied up, confused, and angry, but otherwise fine.”

“Did he say anything?” I asked. “Did he explain himself?”

“Not really, but he doesn’t have to.” She folded her hands in her lap. “I know what group he works for and all about The Council. Granted, it’s been a very long time since I’ve run into a witch hunter in person, and to be perfectly honest, I thought The Council’s power was dwindling since they hadn’t launched any recent large-scale attacks. Apparently, I was wrong.”

“What do you mean by large-scale attacks?”

“I think it would just be easier if I start at the beginning,” she said. “As I was planning to do before your familiar showed up.”

I got comfortable in my seat and looked at her expectantly.

“Alright, well, the beginning means going back to my childhood. Unlike yourself, I was born into a family of witches. A coven, actually.
